A pre-fabricated steel elevated outdoor space for an existing townhouse in Fitzroy, providing an additional storey to enjoy views outwards above the rooftops and across the city skyline. The new deck sits above the house with minimal intervention. A cantilevered steel structure supported by adjacent boundary walls sitting above the existing roof. The permeable deck is accessed from the level below by a suspended spiral stair. The rooftop provides a space of versatility: cook, entertain, retreat for solitude. A sun-drenched surface ideal to sunbathe upon and a street-facing triangular plunge pool for refreshing respite. Its cocoon-like form responds to orientation by minimising overshadowing to nurture its inhabitants. Partly enclosed by a faceted steel frame, FRP perforated panels provide shade & ensure privacy from the adjoining houses.
The structure was fabricated entirely off-site & craned into position in a day.
